BTEC Level 2 Handcuffing Course 
Course Aim: To qualify individuals with a Nationally Recognised Vocational Level 2 Qualification Award in the Safe and Effective Use of Restraint Equipment. Handcuffing Course Scotland

The Main Aims of the Course are: 

  • Understand the primary reason for handcuffing.

Understand the Health & Safety implications, including:

  • Sections 2 and 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974
  • Regulation 3 (1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Handcuffing Course ScotlandRegulations 1999
  • Requirements of PUWER stands for the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (or Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999).
  • Health and Safety Offences Act 2008
  • Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.Handcuffing Course Scotland

Understand the law, including compliance with:

  • Section 3 (1) of the Criminal Law Act 1967
  • Common Law of Scotland, England and Wales
  • Section 117 PACE (England & Wales only)
  • Articles 2, 3 and 5 of the Human Rights Act 1998.

Understand other areas of guidance if required such as:

  • The Mental Health Act Code of Practice
  • NICE guidelines.
  • Understand the medical implications of handcuffing, including positional asphyxia.

Course assessments

At the end of the course you will be assessed on:

  • how to apply handcuffs to a passive subject.

  • how to apply handcuffs to an aggressive subject.

  • how to remove handcuffs correctly.

To gain your BTEC level 2 certification from Edexcel you will also need to complete a learning log.

Course Duration: 1 Full Day

Certification: BTEC Level 2 Award in the Safe and Effective Use of Restraint Equipment.

Following successful completion of the programme, delegates will receive the BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Award in the Safe & Effective Use of Restraint Equipment.

Course Requirements: 

Candidates should have previously undertaken physical intervention and conflict management training prior to attendance on the Handcuffing Course. The techniques which we are teaching have been risk assessed to the NFPS standards and have been taught by us for the last three years. They are currently taught to members of HM Court Service, Flight Air Marshals, Close Protection Operatives,  Door Supervisors, Security officers and people working in Mental Health Institutions.
